Sleep? Where we’re going we don’t need sleep.
My fifth Mille was one of my most enjoyable. Friends old and new, cars familiar and fresh; shooting this year’s was a delightful challenge. Thanks to my photo-car co-driver Ellie Barber, and to the miraculous 1974 Datsun 260Z that she welded together — out of parts from eight 260s. Talk about commitment.
Another Mille, another twelve total hours of sleep. Well worth it — this just might have been my favourite Mille yet. Familiar faces, heaps of enthusiasm, and a full grid from start to finish. Personally, I’m well pleased to have recruited a few more future Mille fixtures as well. You folks are the best.
Shouts-out to Aaron and Zoe Neilly for resurrecting the SVO with a spare Pony belt, leaving the only candidate for the Hard Luck Award… my co-driver and assistant Hiba, for having endured my company in the endearingly hideous Fiat Multipla. Thanks to the Pokorny family for lending that glorious, lumpy chariot when all of my classics were misbehaving.
After three days, four different driver's seats, four important new friendships, twelve cumulative hours of sleep, and eight hundred frames between two cameras, my third Maple Mille came to a close.
Classic Car Adventures’ annual Summer Camp for Big Kids Who Love Driving Old Cars has become my favourite weekend of the year, and it's been a delight working through these images. COVID has made this an unusual year for motoring events, but Parry Sound’s Grand Tappattoo Resort made it easy and comfortable to enjoy Mille camaraderie with safety and comfort. My thanks as always to Dave Hord and all of the pals who make this the special time that it always is.
Congratulations as well to Larry Nobbs on receipt of the Hagerty Spirit of the Mille award. Larry has been through a lot this past year, and it was a delight to see him and the Wildcat back out.
What a splendid autumn weekend! This year’s Mille took participants from Orillia to Haliburton to Peterborough. It was a pleasure seeing such a vibrant blend of classics roll through the Canadian shield, this time from the front of the pack!
Congratulations to my friends Tom & Colleen Pokorny, who caved to my months of badgering and went from Mille first-timers to recipients of the Hagerty Spirit of the Mille award. Thanks for being such a great part of this event’s delightful culture.
I really had no idea what I was in for when Aaron Neilly asked if I would accompany him in the sweep car for a 1,000km classic rally. It was tough getting a great many photos from the tail of the pack, but a day spent out front with my new friend Clayton Seams facilitated some nice overcast panning shots. Congratulations to Jason Plugowski & Simon Wheeldon on receipt of the Hagerty Spirit of the Mille award, and thanks for filling everyone’s mugs as we waited for the ferry!
My first Mille was a fabulous experience, and I look forward to many more. I’ve finally found my people.
